Battle of Okinawa relief movement from Hawaii to Okinawa

Hope everyone is doing well and keeping safe during these difficult times.  I also wanted to apologize for the lack of updating our site.  We hope to have a dedicated webmaster to keep this site updated and everyone informed of upcoming events.

I wanted to share an article from one of our former member that moved to Hawaii.

Aloha,

I’m reaching out to Uchinanchu groups to share a post-Battle of Okinawa relief effort story (attached). This article is a synopsis of all the information (documents, letters, articles and photos) we uncovered both in Hawaii and in Okinawa (prefecture archive and prefecture library).

Hawaii is one of many states that rallied to support Okinawans in desperate need in the motherland. Okinawans in countries like Argentina also sent relief supplies. This story covers Hawaii’s effort but the scale coming from across the country and S. America was phenomenal.

In sharing this story I’m finding out that the majority of Uchinanchu are not aware of the extent of the relief effort. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Ippee nifee deebiru!

Dear Okinawa Kenjin Club Members!

I have received the 2017 Junior Study Program Application forms from Okinawa Prefecture.   It is a great way for our young generations (13yo – 20yo: more details in the link below) to go to Okinawa and spend time with locals for a week or so.

http://www.pref.okinawa.lg.jp/site/bunka-sports/koryu/2017ujsbosyu.html

The application deadline is on Friday, April 14, 2017, which means we must submit the application on Thursday, April 13, 2017 to get to Okinawa on that day.

Please let me know if you have any questions or your children or grand children might be interested in applying to this program.

I look forward to speaking with you soon!

Sincerely,
Tomo Uehara
President of Okinawa Kenjin Club of WA

Seeking focus group participants

This project involves research focus groups designed to evaluate public health messages that encourage adult children to take their parent to a memory specialist or doctor. As part of this project, we are currently recruiting male and female Chinese or Japanese adults with at least one living parent, step-parent, or parent-in-law aged 65 or older. This August, four, 75-minute focus groups will be conducted with 8 to 12 participants each at a convenient location in Seattle. In each focus group, we will share potential public health messages and ask participants for their feedback and input on how they might modify these messages to better fit their communities.

It is important that older adults who have dementia get screened and treated as early as possible – for themselves, their spouses, their adult children, and their care providers. Though this study is being conducted nationwide with African-American and White adults, as well as the LGBT community, we believe it is important to test its messages with Chinese and Japanese adults, as well. Particularly given the limited research on brain health messaging for Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the U.S., bringing these voices into a larger study like this is critical to determining the success and generalizability of the study’s findings, overall.
